Local Searches like “remodeler near me” or “painter Santa Barbara” trigger the local search algorithm, usually resulting in a Google Map result at the top of the search. The 3 businesses ranking in the top 3 are listed on the Google Maps results and receive about 60-70% of all clicks or calls for that search.

How does Google determine how a Google Business Profile Ranks

Google tells us that there are 3 factors that are used in determining how high your Google Business Profile (GBP) shows up in local search results: Relevance, Proximity (Distance), and Prominence.

Relevance: How well your profile matches what someone is searching for. Google considers things like the completeness and accuracy of your business information in your profile, including your categories, description, and keywords. Regularly updating your profile with details about your products and services helps Google understand your business better. This includes doing regular Google Posts and continuing to add and update Questions and Answers.

Proximity (Distance): Google prioritizes showing local businesses that are close to the searcher's location. So, if someone searches for "tacos near me," restaurants closest to them will be more likely to appear in the results. If someone searches for a service area business (where the business goes to the customer's location, Google uses the business address as the center point for calculating the distance (even though the service area business address is not displayed).

Prominence: This is a broad factor that encompasses your business's reputation and establishment. Factors like positive reviews, responding to all reviews, review velocity (the volume and frequency of new reviews of your business), citations (mentions of your business elsewhere online, such as business directories and other key sites), and overall brand recognition all influence prominence. The more established and well-regarded your business is, the higher you're likely to rank. Your website and the pages that include the content for the products and services you offer, as well as the locations you serve (if appropriate) reinforce the prominence of your Google Business Profile. Ultimately, the signals sent about your business online have a cumulative effect on Prominence.

Where You Can Expect My Google Business Profile to Display on the Google Map Rankings

The following all use the businesses address that is entered into the Google Business Profile as the center point of the radius.

* For brick and mortar types of businesses, the Google Maps ranking is most likely to be within a 3-5 mile radius.

* For professional services businesses, where most clients come to your place of business, the Google Maps ranking is generally in a 5-10 mile radius.

* For service area businesses, where your business goes to the customer's location, the Google Maps ranking is generally in a 5-10 mile radius.

* Note: Obviously there are some big factors that impact what is required to rank well, such as competition for the primary Google category within the geography near the business. Densely populated areas can expect smaller effective radiuses for ranking on the Google Map. And of course, how effective your business has been at establishing Relevance and Prominence.
