When Should You Post on Social Media?

People ask all the time about when they should post content to social media.  This is a tricky question, and honestly, I wish my answer was something other than “it depends.”  People put content together so potential customers can see it, so it makes sense that they want to guarantee the right eyes are seeing it.  Just as television and radio advertisers pay more to have their content displayed in primetime, companies using social media do everything they can to make sure that their content is published at the right time of day.

My Clever Agency put together a fantastic inforgraphic that not only covered when people should be posting on their different platforms, but what type of content they should assemble and how they should formate it.

Obviously, they give you a pretty open timeframe for your posting.  You want to avoid the times when people are asleep, but you shouldn’t worry too much about whether your post is shared at 2:00 pm or 3:00 pm.  As always, the focus should be on producing high quality content and passing it along in a way that will encourage engagement and get people interacting with your company.

Time of day may not be the most important factor, but what about different days of the week?  The Huffington Post asked this question and had some interesting findings.  They find, for instance, that engagement is higher on Thursdays and Fridays than other days of the week.  While this may not be enough to guide your entire social media strategy, it should make you think about when your target customer is using social media and when they will be most likely to view your content.

This information about when to post is helpful, but it should always be viewed in light of your customer personas and when you feel they will be online.  That should be the most important aspect of you social media strategy, so make sure you don’t let anything get in the way of that.  Figure out when your target customer will be online, and do your best to meet them there.  And never forget to create content that is engaging, because that will do more than anything to expand your reach!

content is king
